Bluff 2009 No 4 of the Anticipation (North coast) series. Pencil on paper.
So much of the excitement of surfing comes from the anticipation that the surfer experiences before getting into the water. Bluff 2009 is one of a series of pencil drawings of approaches to surf spots on the North Coast of west Penwith, Cornwall. The aim was to portray the obsessional attachment that surfers feel towards often mundane paths and car parks that lead down to the sea. During the walk to the ocean the surfer imagines the possible surfing scenario they are about to experience - often overly optimistic visions of perfectly formed uncrowded waves and equally perfect waveriding. However the surfing reality, in this part of the world especially, more often than not fails to live up to that vision, but that feeling of pre-surf excitement and anticipation of what might be, is part of what makes the whole surfing experience so addictive.
